CANYON, Texas – The Lions could not parlay the momentum from beating Angelo State on Wednesday into a win at West Texas. West Texas was able to pull away in each of the three sets to sweep the Lions for the third straight time.
A&M-Commerce was able to hang around in the early stages of each set but let the Lady Buffs get on runs late to win each set comfortably.
The Lions started off well, winning five of the first seven points of the opening set. West Texas kept clawing their way back each time the Lions tried to get more than a two point. A kill by
Amy Davault gave the Lions a 12-10 then the Lady Buffs scored three straight to take their first lead at 13-12 thanks to a kill by Lee Golden. The Lions then tied the score back up at 15 and 16 before West Texas closed the set on nine to one run for a 25-17 win.
The second set saw the teams split the 18 points before West Texas got three straight to make it a 12-9 advantage. The Lions cut the lead to 15-13 off a set error by Kameryn Hayes but that was as close as the Lions would get. The Lady Buffs extended the lead out to six at 22-16 before winning the set, 25-18.
It was a tale of two sets in the third set. The first 14 points were split evenly then the Lions got a kill from
Breanne Snyder and two Lady Buff errors to take a 10-7 lead. The lead got to as many as four off a kill by
Taryn Driver at 14-10. A&M-Commerce would win the next point to make it 15-11. Then West Texas seemingly flipped a switch. The Lady Buffs won six straight points that forced a Lion timeout. Coming out of the timeout, West Texas won another four straight to make it a 20-15 Lady Buff advantage. Snyder got a kill to stop that run at 20-16 but West Texas won the next five straight to complete the sweep.
The Lion offense struggled all night to get into a rhythm. The Lions had 24 errors to just 31 kills on the night.
Ciara Holmes led the Lions with nine kills.
Kayla Bond had seven digs and two service aces on the night. Davault and Snyder each had six kills and
Jordan Neal dished out 26 assists.
The Lions will look to go 1-1 on the road trip when they face Eastern New Mexico tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. CST in Portales, New Mexico. Eastern has dropped four straight to the Lions over the last two seasons.
