STEPHENVILLE, Texas – A&M-Commerce was up two sets to none on Tarleton State but could not stop the TexAnns when needed in the final three sets. The Lions failed to close out an opponent for the second straight night when holding a two sets to none lead.
Four different Lions recorded at least ten kills in the loss. Ciara Holmes led the way with 17 kills and recorded six digs. Amy Davault had her fourth straight double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Kayla Bond also 14 kills and added the blocks for the Lions. Breanne Snyder recorded a double-double was well with 12 kills and 10 digs. Jordan Neal recorded her second 60-plus-assist performance with her 63. Neal also added a team leading 17 digs.
The Lions came out ready to play and took a quick 5-1 lead, tying to put last night's defeat in the review mirror quickly. Tarleton used both of its timeouts early trying slow down the Lions. The lead held steady through the middle stages of the set and the Lions were closing in on the set win. Tarleton State was not going to make it easy though. The TexAnns battled back to the game at 24 after surviving the first set point from the Lions. The score was tied again at 25 after the sides traded points then Lions took advantage of their fourth set point and won the first set, 28-26.
In set number two the teams started off tight, trading the first 10 points. A&M-Commerce got the lead out to 10-7 off a kill from Holmes. Tarleton State tied the set back up twice at 17 and 19 all but could not take the lead. The Lions took the lead back at 20-19 off an error from Tarleton State and Snyder closed the set with a kill to give the Lions a 2-0 sets lead.
Tarleton State was strong at the start of set three, winning the first five points and forcing a quick Lion timeout. The Lions cut the lead to 9-6 off a Snyder kill and could not get any closer. Tarleton State used a four nothing run to make 16-9 and cruised to a 25-17 set win to stay alive in the match.
Like set three, Tarleton State came out quick and got a 4-1 lead. The Lions then used a 4-0 of their own to make it 6-5 in favor of the TexAnns. A kill by Davault gave the Lions their first lead since set two at 10-9. The lead was short-lived and Tarleton State came to take an 11-10 lead of their-own. The Lions tied the set at 14 thanks to an error by Tarleton and another error gave the Lions the lead back at 15-14. The Lions held the lead at 20-17 before the TexAnns ended the set on an 8-1 run to win the set 25-21.
The Lions were trying avoid giving up two sets to none leads in back-to-back games heading into the fifth and decisive set.
In set five Tarleton established the advantage with a 6-3 lead early. Kills from Snyder and Bond got the Lions within one but could tie the set or take the lead. Tarleton ended the match on a 4-0 run after the Lions got it too 11-8 to win the set, 15-8, and complete the comeback.
The Lions now must regroup before Wednesday October 23 when Texas Woman's comes to The Field House. A&M-Commerce will look to split the season series with the Pioneers after dropping their LSC opener in Denton back in mid-September.
