DENTON, Texas – A&M-Commerce won their second straight game and recorded their second consecutive shutout in a 2-0 win over Texas Woman's. Jade Bell scored in the 37 minute and Savannah Henderson scored in the 87 minute for some insurance for the Lions.
With the win the Lions sweep the series with the Pioneers and pick up ground in the LSC standings. A&M-Commerce is now 10-4-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in LSC play. Texas Woman's falls to 4-10-2 and 1-6-1 in the LSC. This is the first time since 2009 that the Lions have reached the double digit wins.
The Lions were able to control the ball and scoring opportunities early in the first half. Henderson had multiple chances of her own in the opening twenty minutes and Callie Annett; Samantha Huston also had chances but could not find the back of the net.
Bell then took a feed from Vicky Back and got behind the back line of the Pioneers to beat Ariana Morrison, in the Pioneer net, to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The goal was Bell's fourth of the season. Back's assist was her second of the season her eighth point of 2013.
The second half saw the Pioneers get some offensive pressure in the Lions' defensive third. The Lion defense was up to challenge and limited the Pioneer to no shots off of two corners and sustained possession.
After a Pioneer goal kick, the Lions took possession in the midfield then Henderson found herself on the end of long pass. Henderson then fought her way past the last Pioneer defender and beat Morrison to give the Lions some insurance in the 87 minute. The goal was Henderson's seventh of the season and her 21st point.
Callie Ballard recorded two saves in her sixth shutout of the season. Ballard is now tied with Taylor Jordan and Amber Ramoz for the eight on the single season shutout list.
A&M-Commerce returns to the pitch next Friday when West Texas A&M travels to Commerce on the final weekend of the regular season. The Lions then close out the regular season on Sunday, November 3 when they host the Zias of Eastern New Mexico.
