COMMERCE, TEXAS – Midwestern got a penalty kick with one second remaining in the first over time after a hand ball in the box was called on the Lions and Tatyanny Griffiths put it away to give the Mustangs a 3-2 win. It is only third time in 10 years that the Lions have lost a game when scoring at least two goals.
The Lions controlled the flow of the game for a vast majority of the game but allowed Midwestern to get some chances and the Mustangs capitalized on them.
A&M-Commerce recorded six shots in the opening twenty minutes but were unable to get anything past Kallie Essary in the Mustang net. Then in the 21st minute the Mustangs struck first with Griffiths getting her first of the day off a rebound inside the six-yard box.
Ten minutes later the Lions got on the board when Vicky Back converted on a penalty shot after Essary got booked for a yellow card after taking down Julia Hernandez on a break in the box. Callie Ballard then made two saves to keep the score at 1-1 going into the halftime break.
The second half saw the Lions control the possession and number of chances. The Lions got four corner kicks and four shots in the first 10 minutes of the half. Over the next twenty the Lions continued to control the ball and limited the Mustang to no shots in first 30 minutes of the second half.
Savannah Henderson broke the tie with her goal off a free kick in the 76th minute after a foul was called on the Mustangs after a take down of Hernandez. The Mabank native now has five goals on the season to lead the Lions.
The lead for the Lions was short lived when Alexandria Edwards tied the score again after putting one past Ballard after two shots had been turned away, less than five minutes late. Edwards' tally was her first on the season. Henderson had another chance for the Lions inside of three minutes but the shot went over the crossbar.
A&M-Commerce had a corner kick in the 94th minute but the Lions were unable to get a shot away. After a throw in by the Mustangs they gained control of the ball then got a shot away that was blocked but by the hand of a Lion defender inside the box and the Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick. Griffiths then put the ball into the right corner, as Ballard guessed wrong, to give the Mustangs their fourth straight win in Commerce.
Next up for the Lions are the Pioneers of Texas Woman's on Thursday October 10th at Lion Soccer Field. The Pioneers come into the game off a win over Angelo State and sit at 1-2-1 in Lone Star Conference play like the Lions.
