LAWTON, Okla. – A&M-Commerce volleyball did something they had not done in 20 years Friday evening - win a match at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla. The Lions took a 3-1 victory over the Aggies, snapping a 14-game skid that dates back to 1993 as A&M-Commerce improves to 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Taking the court in new uniforms, the Lions dominated the first set, 25-11 over Cameron. After the Lions took the lead at 2-1 they never gave it up again as they went on runs of three plus points five different times. Four different Lions hit at least .500 in the opening set and only recorded four errors on 32 total attacks. Amy Davault lead the attack with five kills on nine attempts. Ciara Holmes and Breanna Snyder added three each and Jordan Neal dished out 11 assists on 17 points for the Lions.
Cameron hit -.024 with seven errors and six kills. The offense for Cameron tallied a total of seven points in the set. The Lion service game never let up and made passing difficult for the Aggies in set number one.
Head coach Craig Case was pleased with the first set, "We did a lot of really good things tonight and especially in the first set. The things we talk about we went out and did really well, I was pleased with that", he said post game.
The second set was much more competitive than the first as the Aggies got into the flow of their offense and really forced the Lions to play point-for-point trough the middle stages of the set. The Lions were able to put some distance between them and the Aggies late, scoring the last six straight points, and closed out the second set with an ace from Jordan Neal to take a two sets to none lead.
"They struggled passing early and once they got into and once they started passing better it made it really tough on us to defend. I thought made some good adjustments and got in system more", continued Case postgame.
The Aggie offense really picked it up in the third set that saw them hit .316 and sided out 73 percent of the time. It was a very back and fourth set with neither side being able to build a comfortable advantage at any point. No team had a lead larger than three and saw 11 ties and four lead changes. Cameron got on a mini-run late in the set and got some errors from the Lions to take the third set 25-22.
The fourth set was much like the third in that neither side really got out a lead where they could quote breathe and force the other side to push and play catch-up. Cameron had its largest lead in the set at 13-10 and A&M-Commerce had its at 19-16. The Lions were able to over come some untimely errors that allowed the Aggies to hang around and eventually tied the set at 24-24. The Lions then forced a side out to take the lead and got to match point when Davault closed it out with a kill.
The Lions were led by Davault, who registered her sixth double-double of the season, with 17 kills and 18 digs. Breanne Snyder was the other Lion with double figure kills with 12. She too recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Five different Lions recorded 10+ digs in the match. Neal raised her average of assists per set with her 48 over the four sets. She added 10 digs, for her fifth double-double of the season, and recorded three aces and three block assists.
The win marks the end to the losing streak the Lions had in any building they had ever played in. With the home win last season against Cameron this marks the first time since 2005-06 that the Lions have beaten the Aggies in back-to-back meetings.
The Lions have a quick turnaround as they take on Midwestern State in Wichita Falls tomorrow at 2 p.m. Midwestern State has dropped the last three meetings to the Lions over the last two seasons.
"We have seen them play earlier this season at the Lubbock Christian Crossover [tournament] and that might the best winless team in conference play I have ever seen. We know they are good and a tough place to win. It will be just as difficult as it was tonight to get the win", said Case about heading into match tomorrow against the Mustangs.
After match versus the Mustangs the Lions return home for two matches against A&M-Kingsville on October 5th and Angelo State on Wednesday October 9 at the Field House.
