GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It took 101:25 to break the deadlock at 0-0 and Therese Romero came through for the Skyhawks in double overtime to get the 1-0 win.

The Lions started off well with Sydney Lawthers getting the first shot less than five minutes into the game but it was wide right. Over the next 15 minutes the Lions had two corner kick opportunities and came away without a shot. A third corner came and went less than five minutes later in the 27 minute with no shot on goal. Brionna Minde forced goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa to make a save in the 30th minute; the same can be said for Samantha Huston in the 40th minute.

The Skyhawks were able to get two shots off before the halftime whistle but one was blocked and another sailed high to leave the game scoreless heading into the half.

Head Coach Neil Piper like what he saw in the first half; "We dominated for most of the first half and could have had a goal or two lead [unfortunately] not scoring came back to haunt us."

Callie Ballard was making her first career start in her first career game for the Lions in goal and kept the score tied in the second half when was forced to make five saves including one off a corner from Fort Lewis with under ten minutes to play in regulation. Ballard finished with eight saves.

The first 10 minute overtime saw Fort Lewis almost win it when Megan Striedel hit the cross bar in the 98th minute then teammate Jordan Hix pushed a shot wide left.

Less than two minutes into the second overtime period Romero miss hit a cross the found its way into the far corner giving the Skyhawks the win.

"I felt like a draw would be a fair result in the end but their girl miss hit a cross from the left side and somehow it found its way into the far corner" said Piper post game. He continued. "Hopefully we can recover and get a result on Sunday."

The Lions conclude their Colorado trip on Sunday September 8 against host Colorado Mesa. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. MST (4:00 p.m. CST). The home opener for the Lions is set for Friday September 13 against Harding University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Lions Soccer Field.
