ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A&M-Commerce closed out the Henderson State Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record after beating the Bucs of Christian Brothers University in four sets and sweeping the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in their final game.
In game number one of the day Amy Davault paced the Lions with 16 kills, seven digs and a block. Ciara Holmes continued her story weekend with another nine kills giving her 25 through the first three games and Breanne Snyder also had nine kills for the Lions. Jordan Neal dished out 35 assists and added eight digs and three kills.
The first set against CBU saw the Lion take an early 13-9 lead off kills from Davault, Bond and Taryn Driver. The Bucs would eventually tie the set at 18 thanks to a kill from Alexis Gillis and would not surrender the lead again taking the first set 25-21.
After a string of five attack errors from CBU the Lions had an 11-3 lead to start set number two. The Lions would not let this lead slip away on their way to an 25-18 set win in a set in which they never trailed.
In set number three the Lions were helped by three straight attack errors from the Bucs plus kills from Neal and Bond to have a 17-8 advantage. The Lions would maintain a healthy lead throughout the set and win 25-14.
The fourth set saw Christian Brothers get out to an early 4-1 lead. The Lions soon battled back to tie it up at 6 thanks to an ace by Snyder. The set was back and forth throughout with either side ever having more than a four-point lead. The Lions took the lead for good off a kill from Neal and assist from Davault.
The final game of the day saw three close sets between the Lions and the Bearcats with neither side attacking with much success. The offense was led by Davault once again having 16 kills and recording a double-double with 11 digs. Kayla Bond had 11 kills along with nine digs and Breanne Snyder had another nine-kill performance.
Three early attack errors by the Lions allowed Southwest Baptist to get an early 4-0 lead. The Lions would tie the game on five different occasions and eventually got the lead for good thanks to a service ace from Bond to make it 18-17. The Lions would close out the set on a 7-3 scoring run to win 25-20 in the set.
Set number two saw the Lions get out to a 15-7 lead before seeing shrink to as little as 4 at 24-20 thanks to three straight attack errors that gave the Bearcats some life. Davault ended the set with her fifth kill of the set at 25-21 for the Lions.
The decisive third game saw SBU get out to a lead as large as 18-11 after back-to-back attack errors by the Lions. A mini four-point run allowed the Lions to cut the lead to one at 20-19. Two bad sets in a row allowed the Lions to close out the sweep winning the third set 25-22.
The home opener for the Lions is Tuesday September 10 against the Patriots of Dallas Baptist. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Field House.
