GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A&M-Commerce got on the score sheet early and saw Julia Hernandez notching her first goal in a Lion uniform as the Lions get a win after a tough loss on Friday against Fort Lewis in double overtime before Harding comes to Commerce on Friday September 13.

After an offside call against the Lions, Brionna Minde took control of the ball, beat a defender and put the ball inside the far post for the first goal of the season for her and the Lions. Callie Annett was credited with the assist.

In the 27th minute Hernandez connected on a shot after controlling a bouncing ball from Callie Annett. It was Annett's second assist of the game. Less than three minutes late the Mavericks cut the lead in half with a goal from Julia Kranstover that was a header off a set piece on the left side.

After a lightning delay that lasted about 25 minutes at the start of the second half, the Lions struck again in the 54th minute thanks to Anitra Wright with an unassisted goal that beat the goalie to the left post.

Savannah Henderson pushed a shot wide right 10 minutes later. Hernandez tried to add another goal but was denied by Mesa goalkeeper, Sarah Schnetzler. In the 75th minute Callie Annett had shot hit the crossbar off a corner kick from Minde. The Lions had another corner kick in the 84th minute that lead to another chance for Hernandez but the shot was blocked. Callie had another chance off a corner that was saved by Schnetzler in the 87th minute.

Coach Neil Piper said afterwards, "It was a tough game. They are very quick and their attack is very dangerous. We were able to score two early goals and we were in control."

Piper continued, "They pulled one back before [the] half and they gained momentum heading into halftime. We got a fortunate goal early in the second half and we were unlucky not to score a few more."

A&M-Commerce outshot Colorado-Mesa 14-9 including 9-3 in the second half. Callie Ballard got the start again in net for the Lions and recorded four saves on five shots for her first win of her colligate career.

The Lions return home from their Colorado trip and open the home schedule against Harding University on Friday September 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field.
