SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – With less than six minutes to go in double overtime just when it looked like a scoreless tie was inevitable, the No. 10 Angelo State University Rambelles (8-0-1) handed the Lions (6-4-0) their fourth loss of the season, winning 1-0.
Â
A&M-Commerce was outshot 21-10 in a windy contest where the pace was back and forth for most of the night.
Courtnie Northern came up big for over 100 minutes of action, pawing away 9 saves on the evening. But in the 105th minute, ASU sophomore midfielder
Loni Byers sent a cross to junior forward
Sierra Anderson, who hammered home the game-winner for her fifth goal of the season, spoiling the would-be shutout.
Â
"It was a defensive breakdown for us," said coach
Neil Piper, "We had three girls back, but we left (Anderson) wide open, and she buried it. That's what happens."
Â
On the other end of the field, the usual suspects were unusually quiet.
Jade Bell had three shots (none on goal) and leading Lions' scorer
Savannah Henderson was limited to one shot on the night. Having to look for help elsewhere on offense, defender
Anitra Wright led all A&M-Commerce players with two shots on goal. Angelo State's junior keeper
Shantel Wittke earned her fifth shutout on the season following a relatively quiet night, stopping all five shots on goal generated by the Lions.
Â
After a busy night in the Lone Star Conference in which all six teams were active, the landscape now looks rather different. Angelo State (1-0-1) sits above Eastern New Mexico (2-1) in first place by virtue of their higher win percentage. Meanwhile, A&M-Commerce (1-2) falls into a tie with West Texas A&M for fifth.
Â
The Rambelles have now won their last five games against the Lions, and look to extend their 2014 unbeaten-streak to ten games on Sunday when they host (7-2-1) Texas Woman's. A&M-Commerce will have the chance to seek revenge for tonight's loss on Sunday, October 19 when ASU makes the trip to Commerce. However, the Lions have business to take care of before that. This Sunday, October 5, A&M-Commerce will continue its road trip when they travel to Wichita Falls to take on the undefeated (5-0-5) Midwestern State University Mustangs. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
