Lions Fall to The Hilltoppers

COMMERCE, TEXAS – The A&M-Commerce Volleyball team dropped a three set match to non-conference opponent St. Edward's tonight (25-19, 25-23, 25-20). The Lions were out hit tonight .167 compared to .305 for the Hilltoppers. St. Edward's also had eight fewer attack errors than A&M-Commerce.
 
In the first set St. Edward's was in control of the match from start to finish winning the 25-19. The Lions were led by Taryn Driver who had five of her nine kills in the first set with a hitting percentage of .500. Driver sparked a 3-0 run for A&M-Commerce with a kill that made the score 8-7 SEU.
 
The second set was an entertaining set that featured eight lead changes and 17 ties. With the Lions trailing 7-9 Amy Davault went on a roll with three consecutive kills that gave the A&M-Commerce a 10-9 lead. A kill by Driver gave the Lions a late 23-22 lead. However, it would not be enough as the Hilltoppers went on a 3-0 run to end the set.
 
With A&M-Commerce trailing 11-8 Lacy Jessup went to work with three consecutive serving aces that tied the set up at 11. Back-to-back Courtney Tate kills would give the Lions a 14-13 lead, but St. Edward's would score eight of the next nine points en route to a 25-20 set win.
 
St Edward's (11-2) was led by Elissa Stanton who had 13 kills and a hitting percentage of.765 for the match. Loren Kelly had a team-high 20 assists and Jaclyn Billie added 10 for the Hilltoppers. Defensively St. Edward's was led by Kelly Jimenez who had 14 digs.
 
A&M-Commerce (3-15) was led offensively tonight by Davault who notched her second consecutive double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs. Tate had a match-high 31 assists and added five kills and five digs. The Lions were led defensively by Ashley Mireles who had a team-high 18 digs.
 
A&M-Commerce returns home on Friday, October 10 when the Lions host LSC rival Tarleton State and again on Saturday, October 11 when Angelo State comes to the Field House.
