Canyon, Texas – The A&M-Commerce volleyball team is gearing up for the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, November 13. The Lions will take on the host and number one seeded No.23 West Texas A&M Buffalos for the second time in five days.
The Lions were able to snag the final spot in the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Eastern New Mexico on Friday, November 7. A&M-Commerce will be trying to avenge two losses to the Lady Buffalos this year in the last meeting the Lions lost in three sets.
West Texas A&M is one of the hottest teams in the nation as of late winning their last 22 matches, which is the second longest win-streak in the nation. For the second consecutive season the Lady Buffs finished Lone Star Conference play 16-0.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Bevan is the biggest scoring threat for the Lady Buffs she ranks fifth in the nation in kills with 450. For A&M-Commerce senior outside hitter
Amy Davault has been the biggest offensive threat racking up 440 kills, which ranks sixth in the nation. Assisting on most those kills for the Lions is freshman setter
Courtney Tate who ranks third in the Lone Star conference with 9.69 assists per set and has totaled 1027. Tate's counterpart Kaymeryn Hays leads WT with 834 assists.
Red shirt junior Jessica Johnson anchors the Lady Buffs defensively racking up 118 total blocks and is averaging 1.08 blocks per set. Johnson's counterpart sophomore
Delanee Clark leads the Lions in blocks with 66 total blocks and is averaging .76 per set. Sophomore libero
Ashley Mireles ranks fifth in the Lone Star Conference with 4.77 digs per set and has tallied 506 this season. Sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Britten leads the Lady Buffs in digs with 503 and an average of 4.45.
The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and will be the night -cap. The winner of the match will play the winner of the number four seed Tarleton State and number five seed Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, November 14.
