Dallas, Texas – In a game that featured a combined 105 free throw attempts – 80 makes – and 72 fouls and saw A&M-Commerce break school records in team free throw attempts and makes and individual free throw attempts and makes, the Lions came up short in an overtime thriller at Dallas Baptist, 104-101, despite a career-high 37 points from senior swingman
LaDon Carnegie.
DBU was whistled for 42 fouls sending the Lions to the line for a school record 65 times. The lines knocked down 50 of those attempts setting not only a school record for makes in a single-game but tying a Lone Star Conference all-time originally set by Howard Payne against Sul Ross in 1966. Carnegie went to the line 23 times with 18 makes for single-game records at A&M-Commerce. At one stretch during the game from the middle of the first half to the early going in the second half, the Lions went 10 minutes without a field goal but scored 13 points from the free throw line. The Patriots saw five players foul out before the game went into overtime.
"I have never seen anything like it or been apart of a game where there were more than 100 free throws shot," A&M-Commerce head coach
Sam Walker said. "Let's give DBU a lot of credit. They found a way to get more points than we did and that is the name of the game. We have to regroup and keep finding ways to be successful."
Carnegie scored his career-high 37 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor to go long with his record breaking performance from the line. Carnegie was 3-for-6 from behind the arc, as well.
Anthony Adams followed Carnegie with 20 points and 10 assists for a double-double.
Craig Fofang got in on the double-double action as the reserve big man scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fofang saw 26 minutes of action after fellow forwards,
Darrell Williams and
Everrett Pleasant fouled out. Williams, who entered the game averaging 19 points a game and shooting 63 percent from the floor was limited to just 14 minutes of play and six points.
"His (LaDon's) health looked great tonight. He was one of many players that had a good game for us tonight," Walker added. "I wish we could have seen all of our guys play the whole game tonight, but I am sure they wished they could have kept all their guys in the game too."
In a game that featured 14 ties and 17 lead changes, the Lions led early by ten points, 22-12, with 12:27 left in the first half, only to see the Patriots fight back and pull even at 35 five minutes later. DBU held the lead over the final seven minutes of the half and held the slimmest lead, 46-45, heading into the half.
In the second half, the game was a complete back and fourth battle that saw nine ties and the lead change hands 13 times. The final tie came on two Adams' free throw with 27 seconds left leaving the Lions to defend the final shot of regulation. Shannon Lily's game-winning three-point attempt was defended perfectly by Carnegie as the two teams went gridlocked at 90 into over time.
In the five minute overtime period, DBU struck first taking a 91-94 with 3:48 left, but the Lions pulled even following a Carnegie three on the ensuing A&M-Commerce possession. With the game knotted at 96 at the two-minute mark, DBU got a jumper from Myles Johnson, who finished with a game-high 20 points, to give the Patriots a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Lions only got one of two free throws from Adams on the next possession, but Jordan Walker, who finished with six points on two threes, calmly stepped into a triple and drilled it giving the Patriots a 101-97 lead with 42 seconds left. Fofang scored following an offensive rebound to chip away at the lead, but Johnson tallied two free throws to give DBU a two-possession lead, 103-99, with 11 seconds left. The speedy Adams burned down the floor and scored on a layup, and on the ensuing inbounds Shannon Lily was fouled and went to the line for DBU. Lily only converted one of two free throws giving the Lions a chance to send the game into a second overtime with the Patriots holding a 104-101 lead. The Lions turned to Carnegie for the game-winner, but on the shot the ball was stripped and DBU held on for the three-point win.
It was the first time since the 2006-07 season the Lions scored 100 points in a loss. A&M-Commerce fell 111-106 in double overtime to Central Oklahoma.
A&M-Commerce's 50 made free throws compared to 30 makes for DBU was evened out after the Patriots hit seven more threes than the Lions, 14 compared to seven.
The Lions finished 38 percent from the floor compared to a 43 percent clip for the Patriots. A&M-Commerce held a narrow rebound margin on the boards, 37-35, while the Patriots turned the ball over one less time than the Lions, 16-15.
Five different Patriots scored in double figures led by Johnson. Wesley Gipson followed with 19 points, and Jonathan Perry scored 16 points.
