Lions Run Past Zias, 84-65

Ashlee Johnson had 17 points, four rebounds and four steals in the Lions win over Eastern New Mexico.

COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce hit a season high seven three pointers and got a career high 19 points from Zenobia Winbush off the bench to get a key Lone Star Conference win at The Field House, 84-65 over Eastern New Mexico.

A&M-Commerce (5-18, 4-9 Lone Star Conference) held Eastern New Mexico (6-16, 4-9 LSC) without a field goal for more than six minutes to close to the first half and at the start of the second half. The Lions outscored the Zias 15-0 over that span.

Winbush hit a career high five three en route to her 19 points. Ashlee Johnson had 17 points, four assists and four steals off the bench as well for A&M-Commerce. Devin Oliver recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Breanna Harris posted 12 points and seven rebounds and Aubree Butts had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Zias were able to build their lead thanks to their shooting from behind the three-point line, making six in the first half.

Eastern New Mexico led by as many as 12 with 5:34 to play in the first half then the Lions started to chip away at the lead. The Lions still trailed by 10 with 2:25 to play then did not allow the Zias to get a point for the remainder of the half. During that span the Lions scored 10 to tie the game after a Pegue jumper with a second to play in the half. 

The Lions scored the first six points of the second and never looked back. After Eastern cut the lead to two the Lions scored the next eight, capped by a Winbush three, to take a  51-41 lead with 13:49 left.

Johnson made a layup and hit a three pointer with in 30 seconds to give the Lions their largest lead of 19, 78-59, with 6:05 to play in the second half. The Zais could not get closer than 16 for the remainder of the evening as the Lions hit their last six free throws to put the game away.

On the night the Lions held a 23-8 lead in points off the bench and a 10-2 advatange in transition points. The Lions shot 48.5% from the field, which is the second best mark on the season as a team. The 84 points are a season high for the Lions.
