CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M had five players in double figures and shot 50 percent from the floor to prevent the Lions from winning back-to-back games. Casey Land led the Lady Buffs with 15 points.
With the 95-51 loss, A&M-Commerce (5-19, 4-10 Lone Star Conference) has now dropped the last 11 meetings with #3 West Texas A&M (22-2, 13-1 LSC) and have not won in Canyon since the 2004-05 season.
Breanna Harris led the Lions with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting and recorded three rebounds.
La'Tisha Hearne had 10 points, two rebounds and one steal.
Abigail Leaupepe-Tele had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and four rebounds before fouling out.
The Lions were able to keep in contact with the Lady Buffs through the opening minutes of the game. A Hearne layup tied the score at 6 but Lacee Logan came down and hit a three to get the Lady Buffs back in front 9-6. The Lions would not be able to get back even for the rest of the day and saw WT stretch the lead to nine at 17-8 in less than two minutes.
West Texas A&M extended the lead to 16, 33-17, at the 8:23 mark of the half after two free throws from Sally Higgins. The Lions tried to get to within single digits after the under four media timeout but could not closer than 11 after a layup from Leaupepe-Tele. After a Harris layup to make it 42-30, WT scored the last four points of the half to take a 16-point lead into the break.
WT continued the run to start the second half and had a 23-point lead inside the first of the second half. Another Harris layup stopped the run at 53-32 but WT responded with a 10-0 run make it 63-32. After a Lion basket another WT field goal got the lead back to 31 and the Lions would not get back within 30 for the rest of the afternoon.
A&M-Commerce heads into the last week of the regular season with a road game versus Texas Woman's on Wednesday before closing out the regular season with a home game versus Tarleton State on Saturday, March 1.
