Box Score COMMERCE, TEXAS – The Lions couldn't quite pull off their third major upset in a row Friday, falling short to the No. 18 ranked St. Edward's University Hilltoppers 1-0.
Â
After a scoreless first half, SEU (4-1-0) came out firing, and eventually in minute 64, A&M-Commerce goalkeeper
Courtnie Northern stopped a shot from St. Edward's forward
Gracen Jacks, but coughed up the rebound to midfielder
Ari Garcia, who hammered it home for her first of the season.
Â
The Lions, who fall to 4-2-0, started the game strong, controlling the flow of the game and generating more chances than the Hilltoppers. The pace the Lions were able to maintain was unlike anything St. Edward's had faced all season. Against A&M-Commerce, SEU keeper
Lorrie Santoy saw her amount of shots faced on the entire season double, stopping eight shots and increasing her season-total to 16.
Â
"We played a good game, but that was an unlucky bounce, and those can change everything," said Lions' keeper
Courtnie Northern.
Â
"I thought we played well enough to win," said coach
Neil Piper, "We generated scoring chances, which was the plan, but if you don't convert on them, they don't mean anything. We made some mistakes, and against a team as good as St. Edward's, it's hard to get away with that."
Â
The Lions offense spread its chances around, with five different players finding shots on goal. Even defender
Taylor Rhodes got in on the action with two of her own.
Â
"Our goal was to win fights for balls in the middle of the field, and if we wound up with it, we had the green light to fire away," said Rhodes, "Things obviously didn't work in our favor tonight. It's over, what's done is done. We're going to regroup and get ready for Sunday."
Â
Speaking of Sunday, the Lions now get ready for a trip to Arkansas on Sunday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. There, they will face the 1-4-1 Ouachita Baptist Tigers. After that, the Lions will come home for a much-needed rest, with four days before their next game against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Friday, September 26.
