Turning PointThe Lions finished off the weekend sweep by sweeping the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs 3-0 (25-19; 25-23; 25-18).
Veronika Baric led the Lions with a second consecutive 19-kill performance finishing with a .293 hitting percentage on 42 swings.
Taryn Driver also had a double-digit kill performance concluding with 11 kills and a .250 hitting percentage.
Taryn Driver,
Jaslyn Wacker, and
Sydney Reyes also had a great defensive match as the Lions continued their defensive assault with eight total blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENEDSet 1A&M-Commerce came out and played a great first set as far as controlling the momentum inside of The Field House. Despite the seven attack errors for the Lions in comparison to the three committed by the Lady Buffs, The Lions ended with a .214 hitting percentage with help from
Veronika Baric and
Taryn Driver who both tallied five kills in the first set. Middles
Jaslyn Wacker and
Sydney Reyes also contributed to the party with three kills each and three blocks total. The Lions went on to win the first set 25-19.
Set 2Although the second set score indicates a close set, The Lions really made their presence known on the offensive side of the net. The Lady Buffs had no answer for the outside dual attack of
Veronika Baric and
Summer Alford who totaled seven and six kills respectively. The Lions led the entire set and not one tie was recorded. When the second set seemed to be at its tightest with a score of 24-23, Baric came through with a kill to win the set 25-23.
Set 3The Lions jumped out to an 18-9 lead out of the locker room and looked as if they were cruising to another home sweep. But the Lady Buffs refused to lie down and went on a four-point run to get back into the set. At a score of 19-14, the Lions reclaimed the momentum once and for all after three straight points which consisted of a kill by
Courtney Tate, an ace by
Ashley Mireles, and another kill by
Veronika Baric. The Lions went on to win the third set 25-18, which was their biggest margin of victory in the match. Baric led the way with another seven-point set to help lift the Lions over the Lady Buffs in three sets. The two teams only tied once in this at 1-1. After that point, the Lions gained and kept the lead for the remainder of the set.
