Lions roll to 5-0 win at UT Permian Basin to move to top of LSC table

ODESSA – The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team moved to the top of the Lone Star Conference standings at the halfway point of the league schedule with a 5-0 win at UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Lions are now 8-3-0 overall and 5-1-0 in LSC play with 15 points, as the only team with five wins after six games in the double round robin schedule.
 
A&M-Commerce returns home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Texas Woman's.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Sophie Haywood was the offensive catalyst for the Lions, scoring two goals and passing out a pair of assists.
- Savannah Grasser scored her eighth goal of the season, becoming just the third player in Lion soccer history to score 40 career goals.
- Also scoring goals were Vicky Back and Jessica Rogers.
- The Lions outshot the Falcons 20-10 with 11 shots on goal.
- Caitlin Duty made three saves for the Lions.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions wasted little time taking a commanding lead in the contest, as Haywood scored her first goal of the season in the 11th minute on an assist from Megan Paul. Just one minute and six seconds later, Haywood assisted on Grasser's goal to make it a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute.
 
Haywood picked up her second assist of the match in the 28th minute, feeding the ball to Back for a goal to make it a 3-0 lead that would carry into halftime.
 
The Lions' struck in quick succession again in the second half, with a pair of 51st minute goals. Haywood scored her second goal of the game at the 50:32 mark and just 22 seconds later, Rogers found the back of the net for the first time this year with a shot from the right side on an assist from Michelle Kotlik.
 
Duty made two saves in the second half, as the Falcons took six second half shots.
