Kingsville, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville connected on 15 of its 26 three-point field goals to lift the Javelinas over the Lions, 84-71, Wednesday night snapping A&M-Commerce four-game winning streak.
Turning Point- The Javelinas, who never trailed in the game, extended a five-point margin, 47-42, with just shy of 17 minutes left into an 18-point advantage, 66-48, thanks to a 19-6 over a span of five minutes to seal the win.
Highlights- Three Lions scored 11 points sharing the team lead.
Anthony Adams scored his 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.
JR Owens added his 11 points after going 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from long range.
Bryant Crowder was the final Lion with 11 points after going 4-of-8 from the floor.
- The Lions shot 45 percent from the floor and 43 percent form the long range after hitting six of their 14 threes. Kingsville went 47 percent overall and 58 percent from deep after hitting 15 of their 26 long-range attempts.
- Kingsville held a 37-28 advantage on the glass.
- The two teams were whistled for 55 fouls in the 40-minute time frame. Two Lions fouled out with another two sitting at four fouls. One Javelina reached the foul count with three more sitting on four fouls as time expired.
Inside the box score- With the loss the Lions fall to 16-7 on the season and 5-5 in the Lone Star Conference. However, that is only two games out of first place with league-leading Cameron sitting at 7-3.
Summary1st Half- In a first half plagued with 24 fouls, the Javelinas got on the scoreboard first with a three 1:10 into play and never trailed in the half. Kingsville pushed the lead out to eight points, 16-8, with 12:39 remaining, but the Lions answered with an 8-0 run knotting the game at 16 two minutes later. Owens sparked the run with five points including a wing three in transition.
- A minute later with the scored knotted at 19, the Javelinas regained control with an 8-1 to take a 27-20 lead with 5:55 left in the half. Kingsville led by 11 points twice over the final 5:55 before taking a 41-31 advantage into the locker rooms. The final Javelinas basket of the half came following an offensive rebound as the seconds ticked off.
2nd Half- The Lions cut the lead down to five points, 47-42, following a Carson triple from the corner with 16:12 left, but Kingsville responded 19-6 run over the next five minutes to take command of the game with a 66-48 lead.
- The Javelinas pushed the margin out to 20 points, 71-51, with 9:11 left and held on for the 13-point, 84-71, win.
What's Next?- The Lions return to the friend confines of The Field House Saturday at 6 p.m. against Angelo State. The Rams (18-4, 6-4) enter the game after taking down Tarleton State in double overtime Wednesday night.
