Lions, TexAnns to Play Rubber Game in Opening Round of LSC Tournament

Commerce, Texas – A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State will compete for the final time in the 2015-16 season in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, Texas on Thursday, March 3 at the Allen Event Center.
 
A&M-Commerce defeated Tarleton State 78-71 to improve their record to 16-12 and 9-7 in Lone Star Conference competition, completing the month of February with a 6-2 record. The Lions have no problems when it comes to scoring, averaging 70.6 points per game in conference play ranking them third in the conference. The Lions shooting continues to improve as they now rank third in the conference shooting 40.7 percent from the floor. A&M-Commerce defense has stayed strong all season, averaging 29.6 defensive rebounds per game and 8.46 steals per game. Artaejah Gay leads the Lions with 11 points per game and shoots 55 percent from the floor. Shomari Harris averages 10.5 points per game and leads the Lions with 102 total assists while both Gabby Scott and Princess Davis average nine points per game. Gay, Harris, Scott, and Davis were each named All-LSC Honorable Mention for the Lone Star Conference Tuesday, March 1 in Allen, Texas. Davis was also named to the All-Defensive Team as she ranks fifth in the Lone Star Conference with 43 total steals this season.
 
The TexAnns finished the regular season 16-10 and 10-6 in conference play after having their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Lions. In conference games this season, Tarleton State averages 66.7 points per game and has one of the top two defending teams giving up only 61.8 points to opponents as well as averaging 9.06 steals per game. The TexAnns hold the second slot in the conference with a 34.4 three-point field goal percentage, and a 70.9 free throw percentage. Tarleton State ranks third in field goal percentage shooting 40.9 percent from the floor in Lone Star Conference competition. As a team, Tarleton State has been outrebounded in conference play, ranking sixth and seventh in defensive and offensive rebounds respectively. Bailey Wipff leads the TexAnns with 13.4 points per game this season and shoots 41.8 percent from three-point range in conference play. Ikpeaku Iwobi is the second highest rebounder in the conference, averaging 7.7 rebounds per game this season. Both Wipff and Iwobi were named to the All-LSC Second Team.
 
The Lions are 20-31 overall against the TexAnns. The two teams will meet for the third time in the 2015-16 season with each team winning one game on their home floor. The teams will play on a neutral floor for their third meeting this season with the Lions holding a 3-7 record when playing against Tarleton State at a neutral location. Shomari Harris has been successful against the TexAnns this season as she averages a team high of 16 points per game, 11 total rebounds, eight assists and four steals, in the two games played this season.
