Lions win third straight with 3-1 victory over St. Edward's

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team won its third consecutive home match Saturday, picking up a 3-1 win over St. Edward's University in non-conference action.
 
The Lions move their record to 8-6 overall with the win while St. Edward's falls to 4-8 on the season. A&M-Commerce is in action again on Friday, September 30, hosting Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference action.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- A&M-Commerce won by set scores of 25-8, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18.
- The Lions hit for a .304 rate in the match, with six players notching seven or more kills.
- Neka Nelson led the team with 13 kills and only one error for a .500 hitting percentage.
- Daisge Smith and Taryn Driver had 10 kills apiece.
- Smith added 17 digs for a double-double. Rylie Fuentes also had a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs.
- Gabriela Rosa passed out 25 assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions rolled in the first set with a big 17-point margin of victory. The lead was only at five points (12-7) for A&M-Commerce when a pair of Driver kills sparked a 13-1 rally to end the set.  A&M-Commerce hit for a .360 percentage in the set, while the Hilltoppers struggled to a minus-.097 rate. Driver had five kills without an error.
 
SEU rebounded in the second set, outhitting the Lions .308 to .143. The Hilltoppers won eight consecutive points in the middle of the set to earn the winning margin.
 
After the break, A&M-Commerce came back strong, hitting .350 in the third set. SEU was within one point at 15-14 before five straight Lion points. Smith had five errorless kills in the set, while Jaslyn Wacker had four kills on four swings.
 
The Lions followed Neka Nelson to the fourth set win, hitting .419 as a team. Nelson had eight kills on 12 swings to go with a pair of blocks.  The gap was as small as four points at 12-8, but the Lions roared out to a 19-10 advantage quickly and held off a Hilltopper charge.
