The Lions have won three straight games and seven of their last eight after Thursday's 83-80 win over No. 12 Angelo State. A&M-Commerce has taken down the top-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference in each of their last two games.
"I think our team is on a mission right now. They're focused on doing everything they can to control what they can control, and that's just playing the team that's ahead of us," said Head Coach
Jason Burton. "We had some losses early in conference, so we can't control winning (the conference), we need some help right now. But we can control how we play, and I think our team's been keyed in to really playing at a high level at home, for one. They realize we had some setbacks that we shouldn't have had and our attention to detail wasn't high in those games, so their effort to make sure we take care of the opponent in front of us has been high."
Krystal Pickron was a catalyst for the Lions in the win over ASU on Thursday, rarely coming off of the floor with 16 points, four rebounds, six assists, and three steals. She also hit the tie-breaking basket in the final minute that put the Lions ahead for good.
"She's played well all year. What I know she's going to bring every day is a high level of intensity. When she wants to crash the boards, she's one of the best rebounders in the conference. To see her pass the ball and distribute the way she did last night was great. In big games, you can expect her to play at a high level. The thing that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, is she's often guarding the best guard on the other team. She had the task of guarding Dorsey last night – which to do what she did on the offensive end last night and still have to guard one of the best players in the conference, I thought she did an outstanding job last night."
Burton also looks forward to a strong team effort in front of the Lion faithful, as the four seniors on his squad are honored for their contributions to the University.
"Tomorrow is our senior day and I know our team is going to come out and put it all on the line for the seniors. Before the Angelo State game, we talked about what we have the ability to do for our seniors in this three-game stretch – to close out with three big wins in a row at home. With it being the senior day game tomorrow, I think our team is really going to be locked in. They're going to give all they have for the seniors. We have four seniors – two of them that have been here for three years and two of them that have been here for two years, so it's really going to be a special day for them.
As for the opposition, Burton expects the Javelinas to put up a fight as they push for positioning farther down the LSC ladder.
"They're fighting not just to get into the tournament but to move up. They're looking at a chance to possibly finish in the top six. They're fighting, they're scrapping, and they're going to give their best effort. As long as we come and we do what we know what we're capable of doing, we win the game. But it's a matter of consistency. I think if you look at the seven games since TWU, we've really been playing consistent basketball, so I don't expect anything different tomorrow."
