The Lions are coming off of their largest win in conference history, a 95-point victory against Dallas Baptist. It is the third consecutive win for the Lions, all of which have come by at least 20 points. Head coach
Jason Burton liked the way his team executed in the last month.
"I thought the month of December was very good for us," he said. "Our margin of victory was 56 points. That included a conference win , another Division II opponent and Dallas Christian. Our team played very well offensively this month. I thought this is the best we have shared the ball. This is the best we have shot the ball and this is the best we have looked.
"I think we are really starting to get comfortable with how we play. People are starting to understand what we want to do and how we want to score. We have been effective creating in transition. And our defense has created a lot of our offense for us. The tone is being set offensively. When you look at the games from Kingsville on, it starts with our defense. Our defense is creating offense for us and they are doing a good job of executing."
With their first win streak of the season, the Lions now look to perform the same way on the road. Burton liked the way his team shot the ball, but knows shooting on the road can be another challenge entirely.
"We've been in our comfort zone shooting in our own gym," Burton said. "But when you go on the road, it is a whole different beast. We have to make sure we carry that momentum on the road with us."
The Lions now head on the road for two conference matches. They face MSU Texas and Cameron, two gyms that always seem to produce close games for the Lions.
"Both places are really tough places to play," Burton said. Those are two places where we have historically had close games. It always comes down to the wire. Last year, we played Cameron in overtime and the Midwestern game was a three-point game in the last minute. Those are tough places to play. Execution down the stretch is going to be huge.
"Lately we have been taking care of the ball and we have gotten off to good starts. Starting with Kingsville, we really started talking about jumping out on opponents and making sure we don't get down. The games we've lost, we've dug a hole in the first quarter. It's important for us to get out of the gate with a lead and hopefully maintain that team throughout the game."
