COMMERCE – Eleven members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team scored in the Lions' 92-60 win over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in the Field House. The Lions made 18 three pointers during Saturday's game, which is tied for third-most in program history.
A&M-Commerce is now 14-2 against Eastern New Mexico in its last 16 games in the Field House. The Lions snapped a two-game losing streak and improve to 11-3 on the year and are back to having a winning record in Lone Star Conference standings with a 3-2 record. Eastern New Mexico drops to 6-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference matchups.
Alex Peavy (Smithson Valley – San Antonio) scored 17 points off the bench. Peavy knocked down 7 of 8 shots from the field, including all three shots from beyond the three-point line.
Leo Lara (Santa Rosa) went 4 for 5 from the distance, totaling 12 points as well as team-leading two steals.
The Lions never trailed in the game and outside the opening tip, the game was never tied.
Alphonso Willis (Atlanta, Ga.) scored the first points of the day and the Lions stormed out to a 7-0 lead. After the first four minutes of the game, the Lions held a 12-3 lead.
A three pointer from Cornell Greenwood brought the Greyhounds within two at the 11:42 mark of the first half. The game was never a one-possession game for the rest of the day, as Lara made two straight three pointers to push the lead back up to eight.
The Lions made seven three pointers in the first half and shot 50 percent from the field, leading 39-31.
Jairus Roberson (DeSoto) led all starters with 15 points, knocking down five three pointers. He had six points in the Lions' 12-2 run to start the second half. Roberson also had two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Shooting 70 percent from the field in the second half, the Lions outscored the Greyhounds 53-29 in the second half. The largest lead of the game for the Lions was 37 points and it came on a three pointer by Peavy. The 37-point lead is the largest the Lions have held in any game this season and the 32-point margin of victory is also season-best.
Joining Peavy, Roberson, and Lara in double-digit scoring,
Augustine Ene (Carrollton – Creekview) totaled 12 points, six in each half. He had eight rebounds, matching Willis for highest on the team, as well as two assists, a steal, and a block. Willis recorded eight points, season-high eight assists, a steal, and a block to go along with eight rebounds.
Clashon Gaffney (Clarksville) stuffed the stat sheet with six points, four rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Demarcus Demonia (Fort Washington, Md.) tallied eight points, five rebounds, and two assists to round out the starting five.
The Lion bench made half of the team's 18 three pointers. To go along with Lara and Peavy, who combined for seven,
JJ Romer Rosario (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.) and
Riley McIntyre (Austin – Bowie) had one each. Romer Rosario totaled five points, two rebounds, three assists, and a block.
Carius Key (Irving – MacArthur) scored four points and dished out four assists.
Rodney Brown (Beaumont – Westbrook) had a two-point shot.
