THIBODAUX, La. – Mya Mitchell scored a goal for the sixth straight match to guide the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team to a 2-0 win over Nicholls on Sunday afternoon at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
A&M-Commerce went 2-0 this weekend outscoring its opponents, 6-0. The Lions did not allow a shot on goal against the Colonels and improve to 4-2 in Southland Conference play, which keeps them in second place at the halfway point of the 12-match conference schedule. A&M-Commerce is 4-6-1 overall, while Nicholls is 0-6 in conference play and 2-10-1 overall.
"I am very happy with our team's performance today vs Nicholls," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "Winning on both Friday and Sunday is a big boost for our team as we try to stay with the top teams in the Southland Conference standings. Sunday matches after Friday night matches are always going to be a grind. To go on the road and get the victory shows the growth our team has made this year."
Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) scored the first goal of the night in the 29
th minute with
Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England) and
Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage) assisting on the goal. Mitchell has scored in each of the last six matches and is the fifth player in NCAA Division I women's soccer this year with a scoring streak of six matches or more.
The Lions got their second goal of the match in the 47
th minute, coming off the foot of Storey, her first goal of the season. The junior midfielder had three points in Sunday's match.
Mindy Shoffit (Wichita Falls - Rider) threw it in and it was headed in by Storey.
Jen Peters (Allen) played all 90 minutes in goal and did not face a shot on goal. The Colonels had seven shots in the match. On the other side of the field, the Lions had 23 shots with six coming from
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), three going on goal. Morrison had six shots as well.
In goal for Nicholls, Reagan Cook stopped four saves and allowed two goals in the first 49 minutes and 44 seconds of the match, while Megan Cook had three saves the rest of the match. The Lions had the 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Lions return home to face Southeastern Louisiana next Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, the Lions will honor their four graduating seniors with a special senior day ceremony.
