SAN ANTONIO – Hitting over .340 percent in Saturday afternoon's match, the Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a sweep of Incarnate Word at the McDermott Center via scores of 25-22, 25-14, and 25-23.
With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Lions pick up the tiebreaker over the Cardinals by sweeping the season series and now hold a Southland Conference record of 6-7, creating a one-match separation in the standings between the two teams. The Cardinals are eighth with a record of 5-8 and only the top eight teams make the conference tournament.
The Lions went on a 5-1 run with the first set tied at 15 to take the early advantage and despite UIW saving the first two set points, the Lions took the set, 25-22, on an attacking error. In the second set, A&M-Commerce had the early 3-1 advantage and extended it to 16-8.
Essence Allen (Longview – Tatum) gave the Lions, who hit over .400 in the set, their first set point, and she closed it out with an ace.
Once again in the third set, the Lions had a 9-3 run to start the frame, and despite the Cardinals pulling to within one twice in the set, A&M-Commerce never trailed. The Lions won five of the last seven points of the set and took the match on a kill by Mille Allgood (Sherwood, Ark.).
Taryn Cast (Peaster) totaled nine kills and three digs, while Allen had 11 kills, nine digs, and an ace.
Lyric Hebert (Arvada, Colo.) posted 14 digs and three assists, while
Celeste Vela (Guadalajara, Mexico) recorded six digs, four kills, and 33 assists.
Ashley Pennington (Frisco – Liberty) had eight digs and
Yasmin Figueiredo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) had eight kills.
