Lions host Senior Day on Sunday

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team hosts Senior Day on Sunday at the Lion Soccer Field as it welcomes Southeastern Louisiana in a battle of Lions.

RECORDS: Entering the weekend in second place with eight points, A&M-Commerce is 4-2 in Southland Conference play and 4-6-1 overall in its first Division I season. Southeastern 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference matches.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to Sunday's match, the Lions will honor their four graduating seniors, Lauren Banning (Pflugerville), Jen Peters (Allen), Lauren Shaw (Livingston – Covenant Prep), and Naomi Sink (Plano East).
 
SECOND PLACE LIONS
Through the first half of conference play, A&M-Commerce is in second place with a 4-2 record, winning over Houston Christian, McNeese, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Nicholls. The Lions have won their last two coming into the matchup against Southeastern.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE LIONS
For the first time this season, the Lions won both matches during a full weekend of conference play, collecting a 4-0 win at home over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a 2-0 win at Nicholls. In the two matches, not only did the Lions keep their opponents scoreless, they also did not allow a shot on goal against the Colonels.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE LIONS
After Sunday's match against Southeastern, the Lions welcome SLC-leading Lamar on Friday and heads on a three-match road swing to Northwestern State (October 16), Incarnate Word (October 21), and Houston Christian (October 23).
 
SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN
The Lions, who have a scoring average of 1.33 goals per game, are 4-4-1 on the season overall and 2-2-1 in conference matches. Its wins in SLC play came at McNeese and at home against Nicholls.
 
Mya Guillory has two goals and two assists for Southeastern, while Emma Jones has two goals and an assist. In net, Olivia Griffin has started eight of the nine matches. She has allowed 1.29 goals per match with a save percentage of .688. She has recorded 22 saves.
 
MITCHELL AND SHOFFIT MAKE HISTORY
On Tuesday, Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) and Mindy Shoffit (Wichita Falls – Rider) became the first two players in A&M-Commerce history to earn Southland Conference Player of the Week awards. Mitchell earned the offensive player of the week award, while Shoffit earned the defensive player of the week award.

MYA IS ON FIYA
Mitchell has scored more goals and more points than any other player in the Southland Conference through six conference matches, having scored in all six matches. She has seven goals, which is two more than other any player in conference play and 16 points, which is six more than anyone else.
 
Her scoring of six straight matches is one of the longest in Division I this season. She is one of five players with a scoring streak of six matches or better.

HISTORIC FIRST WIN
The Lions collected a 4-1 win at home against Houston Baptist on September 9 in its first Southland Conference match. All five goals came in the second half, as the Lions collected the first win in the Division I era and first win for coach Ashley Gordon.
 
SHOFFIT SCORES THE FIRST GOAL
After a drought of over 400 minutes to start the season, the Lions' first goal of their inaugural Division I season came against Colorado College on September 4, an own goal by the Tigers. In the second half, Mindy Shoffitt (Wichita Falls – Rider) scored the first goal by a Lion player to secure a 2-2 tie at Colorado College, scoring in the 87th minute.
 
DOUBLE THE FUN!
Dallas natives and twin sisters, Mya Mitchell and Nya Mitchell from Mesquite Horn High School, join the Lions this season. The Mitchells are one of 27 sets of twins in NCAA Division I women's soccer this fall and A&M-Commerce is one of 22 schools with a set of twins on its women's soccer roster this season.
