FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Three Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball players scored in double-digits, but it was not enough on Monday night at Memorial Coliseum as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons galloped to an 85-68 win in the first game of the Indiana Classic for both teams.
The Mastodons led 8-2 to start the game, but the Lions went on a 10-0 run to go up by four. Purdue Fort Wayne led by as much as 13 points in the first half and extended it to 19 in the second half.
A&M-Commerce, who has lost four in a row to fall to 4-8 on the season, pulled to within single digits in the second half, but Purdue Fort Wayne had a quick 6-0 run to go back up by 14.
CJ Roberts (Irving – Richland) scored 18 points off the bench, shooting 8 for 11 from the field, while
Demarcus Demonia (Fort Washington, Md.) scored 17 and
Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.), in his first start as a Lion, scored 12.
Alonzo Dodd (St. Paul, Minn.) led the team with six rebounds, while
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) tallied three assists, and Demonia recorded three steals. Purdue Fort Wayne forced 19 turnovers and scored 19 off those turnovers.
Williams added six points as well as four points, while
Khaliq Abdul-Mateen (Cy-Lakes),
JJ Romer Rosario (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.) and
Luka Vasic (Pirot, Serbia) scored four each.
For the Mastodons, Bobby Planutis scored 15, Jarred Godfrey and Damion Chong Qui had 14 each. Anthony Roberts scored 12 points off the bench.
The Lions shot 56 percent from the field, but Purdue Fort Wayne had 20 more field goal attempts and shot 47.2 percent from the field. Both benches scored 29 points in the game.
