GLEN ROSE – Despite late-round drama from the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's golf team on Tuesday at Squaw Valley Golf Course, the Lions missed medal match play at the Lone Star Conference Championships by two strokes, finishing tied for sixth overall and
Nathan McCulloch placed third on the player leaderboard.
The Lions entered the day eight strokes back of fourth place and shot -10 as a team in the third round. An eagle from
Zach Burch (Lubbock – Cooper) and a birdie from
Chance Mulligan (Dallas – Bishop Dunne) on the 18
th hole brought the Lions within one of Oklahoma Christian for fourth place, but a bogey set them back by two.
A&M-Commerce awaits the NCAA Selection Announcement on Friday afternoon for the 10 teams from the South Central region selected to the South Central/West Super Regional. The Lions were ranked No. 5 in the last regional rankings prior to the selection announcement.
"We gave it a run today, but just came up short ultimately," said coach
Ryan Hand. "Congratulations to Nathan on his third place finish."
McCulloch (Edinburgh, Scotland) shot 4-under on Tuesday to finish third with a score of 202 (67-67-68).
Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk (Phuket, Thailand) also shot a 68 on Tuesday, he tied for 12
th place with a score of 209 (74-67-68). Mulligan is tied for 19
th place with a score of 212 (74-68-70).
Burch finished the third round, shooting even par and is tied for 44
th place with a three-round score of 222 (73-77-72) and
Simon Haas (Lorch, Germany) tied for 51
st with a score of 225 (74-76-75).
Texas A&M International's Mauricio Figueroa won the individual conference championship with a score of 200 (65-67-68). Midwestern State finished first as a team during stroke play and will take on Oklahoma Christian in the first semifinal, while Cameron and West Texas A&M square off in the other semifinal. The winner of medal match play is the LSC Champion and receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
