No. 19 Lions welcome Eagles in a battle for LSC positioning

COMMERCE – The No. 19 Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team plays its final regular season home games on Tuesday afternoon, hosting the No. 15 Oklahoma Christian Eagles at noon in a key battle in the Lone Star Conference standings, with both teams still alive for the LSC regular season Title.

FIRST REGIONAL RANKINGS
The NCAA released its first regional rankings of the season last Wednesday afternoon. The Lions were tabbed the No. 6 team in the South Central region as they look to make their fourth straight trip to the NCAA tournament. The remaining four games for the Lions come against teams that are regionally ranked.
 
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Lions are ranked No. 19 in the latest NFCA rankings, not moving up or going down despite no games last week due to Easter. The Lions have been ranked in all but one poll this season and have seven wins over teams that are currently nationally ranked.
 
NATIONAL AND CONFERENCE RECOGNITION
For the second time this season, Alyssa LeBlanc (Katy) was selected as the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 21 after 18.2 shutout innings with 32 strikeouts. She was also named the conference's top pitcher on February 22 and selected as the NFCA Pitcher of the Week that day as well. Emily Otto (Lamar Consolidated) has also earned an LSC Pitcher of the Year award this season.
 
Sabrina Anguiano (Riverside, Calif.) was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week as well as the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week on March 15. She batted .909 with three home runs and seven RBIs in four games against Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin.

A LOOK AT THE LIONS
The Lions downed the Cameron Aggies twice last Friday to improve to 37-11 on the season and 20-6 in LSC games. The Lions are two games back in the loss column of UT Tyler for the LSC lead and tied with Oklahoma Christian and Lubbock Christian for second place. The Lions can win the LSC by winning their four remaining regular season games.

Madison Schaefer (Frisco – Independence) has five home runs in her last eight game and improved her season batting average to .338. Anguiano is the team leader in batting average with an average of .373, MacKenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig – East Central) has 27 RBIs and a batting average of .355.
 
The Lions are 10th in the country with 60 home runs. Avery Boley (Fort Worth – Nolan Catholic) slugged a home run on Friday, while Uxua Modrego (Burlada, Spain) had two to increase her season total to 10 and tie her with LeBlanc for the team lead.
 
Leo Terry (Emory – Rains) has 26 stolen bases this season. The Lions are sixth in the country with 134 stolen bases. A&M-Commerce has also drawn 184 walks, which is fifth in the country.
 
LeBlanc has 147 strikeouts this season, which is second in the conference, while Otto is third with 144. Otto is posting an ERA of 2.33 and is 18-3 on the season, while LeBlanc has not allowed a run in her last 12 innings and is 13-6 with an ERA of 2.76.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD
The Lions close out the regular season on Saturday at No. 1 UT Tyler with the doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
The Eagles are 36-10 on the season and two losses to UT Tyler on Friday snapped a 22-game winning streak, the longest in school history. With some help from the Lions, the Eagles are also mathematically alive for the LSC title.
 
Aaliyah Brown is hitting .473 on the season with 40 RBIs. Kylie Janzen has seven home runs and 42 RBIs, leading the team in both categories. Abi LaValley has 26 RBIs. Grace Anderson has an ERA of 2.26 with a record of 12-3 in 19 starts with 95 punchouts. Kali Crandall is 2.30 with 100 strikeouts, and Lindsey Stoeckel is 10-1 with an ERA of 1.26.
