BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field teams finished off a monumental Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex with the Lion men taking third and the women finishing seventh.
In their first time competing in the Southland championships, the Lion men totaled 91 points for third, while the women totaled 46 points for seventh.
The Lions were crowned Southland Conference Champions in three events, their first conference titles since joining the Southland and moving up to NCAA Division I.
J.T. Smith (Klein Oak) won the men's 60 meter dash,
Delan Edwin (Castries, Saint Lucia) won the men's 200 meter dash, and the women's 4x400 meter relay team closed the meet out with a gold medal as well.
A&M-Commerce was the only school to finish in top three in both the men's and women's 4x400 relays.

COACH GEORGE PINCOCK'S THOUGHTS
MEN
Micky Ferdinand (Micoud, Saint Lucia) started the day in the lead for the heptathlon and ended up finishing second with 5,325 points. He was the top finisher in the high jump and finished in the top three in the long jump, shot put, and pole vault.
Trey Wheeler (Scurry-Rosser) was in last place after five events, but climbed in the final two events to finish seventh. He placed seventh in the pole vault and finished third in 1,000 meter run to secure two points for the Lions.
Smith clocked in at 6.65 seconds to win the 60 meter dash, while
Ibrahim Fuseini (Accra, Ghana) timed 6.72 seconds for third, Edwin finished fifth with a time of 6.77 seconds, and
Emmanuel Agenor placed seventh with a time of 6.89 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Edwin timed 21.04 seconds for the title, his first individual conference title, and Smith timed 21.22 seconds for third. The Lion men totaled 38 points in the two short sprint races.
Conner Stockerl (The Woodlands) took seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.64 seconds.
Casey Novelo (Trinity) timed 4:27.90 in the one mile run, securing a point with a eighth place finish.
In field events,
Trayveon Franklin (Montgomery) jumped 49 feet 6.25 inches (15.09m) in the triple jump for a second place finish, while
Chandler King (Hughes Springs) placed seventh with a mark of 46 feet 5.5 inches (14.16m).
To close out the meet, the Lions 4x400 meter relay quartet of
Philip Krenek (Kostelní Strimelice, Czech Republic),
Eddie Barrientes (Chisholm Trail), Stockerl, and Edwin placed second with a time of 3:14.08.

WOMEN
Jenneil Jacobie (Piat Gros Islet, Saint Lucia) cleared 5 feet 8.5 inches (1.74m) for third in the high jump, while setting the new school record.
Maia Maury (Noisy-Le-Grand, France) tied the previous school record of 1.71m on Sunday during the pentathlon and finished tied for sixth on Monday by clearing 5 feet 3 inches (1.60m).
Amaka Ezukanma (Fort Worth – Timber Creek) placed sixth by clearing 39 feet 3 inches (11.96m) in the triple jump.
To start out the day on the track,
Leah Pettis (McKinney North) finished fifth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.67 seconds, while
Sofia Khenfar (Lyon, France) timed 7.69 seconds for seventh. Pettis also finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.42 seconds, while Khenfar took eighth with a time of 24.88 seconds.
Mariana Shostak (Lviv, Ukraine) and
Naomi Ndukwe (Perserville, France) went 5-6 in the 400 meter dash with times of 55.65 seconds and 55.96 seconds, respectively.
Ndukwe, Maury, Khenfar, and Shostak teamed up to win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:44.66, marking the third consecutive season that the Lions won the indoor conference title in the women's 4x400 meter relay.
