Lion Football announces staff promotions, adds Terry and Moriarty

COMMERCE – Texas A&M University-Commerce football coach Clint Dolezel has announced a pair of promotions as well as two additions to the coaching staff for the 2024 season.

Jack Tyler has been promoted to defensive coordinator, having served as the linebackers coach for the last two seasons. Michael Smith is the new assistant head coach; he continues to serve as the defensive line coach and the program's recruiting coordinator. Geoff Terry is the new defensive backs coach, while Matt Moriarty is appointed as the tight ends coach.

"I have been impressed with our defensive staff ever since I arrived back at A&M-Commerce and looking forward to see Jack and Michael continue to grow in their new roles," said Dolezel. "We are excited to welcome Geoff and Matt and the experience they bring to both sides of the ball for us this season."

Tyler and Smith have been part of the defensive staff for the past two seasons, in which the Lions have had one of the top defensive units in the Southland Conference, including being the top total defense in 2022.

Terry arrives to A&M-Commerce after serving as the defensive coordinator, cornerbacks coach, and assistant head coach at Navarro College. The Bulldogs finished as the runner up in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference last season.

Prior to Navarro College, Terry spent three seasons as the defensive backs coach at Delta State, having coached one All-American, Junior Faulk. He had stints at Wingate, Alpharetta High School (Georgia), Duluth High School (Georgia), and Alfred State.

Terry played defensive back for Alfred State, earning NJCAA All-America honors and went on to play at Buffalo. Following his collegiate career, Terry had a stint in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger Cats and signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets.

He is a native of Buffalo, New York.

Moriarty spent last season as the defensive line coach and run game coordinator at Cumberland. The Phoenix was second in the Mid-South Conference in rush defense and fourth in sacks.

He has also served as the assistant coach at North Alabama, Drake, and Samford, all on the defensive side. Moriarty also served as the special teams quality control assistant for Northern Illinois and a defensive line graduate assistant at Central Michigan.

Prior to CMU, Moriarty was the defensive line coach at College of DuPage and defensive tackles coach at Louisiana Christian.

Moriarty played collegiately at Harper Junior College located in Palatine, Illinois, as an offensive and defensive lineman. He was a member of the 2008 NJCAA national championship team. He finished his collegiate playing career at Elmhurst College.

A native of Naperville, Illinois, Moriarty graduated from Elmhurst College in 2014 with a degree in communications.
