COMMERCE – For the first time in four seasons, the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team has started the year with a win after downing the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 4-1 on Thursday night at the Lion Soccer Field.
Hannah Bell (Duncanville) tallied two first half goals, while
Camila Montero (Langham Creek) and
Savannah Powell (Arlington – Martin) added a goal each as well on the first match day of the season.
The Lions have started the season 1-0 for the first time since the spring season of 2021 and the four goals tie the most scored in a match in the Division I era. A&M-Commerce and Oral Roberts have begun the season against each other for the third straight year, this was the first win in the series for the Lions. Both teams are now 1-1-1 against each other.
Bell's first goal came in the 15
th minute off an assist from
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep). Campuzano played a ball through, which opened a free one-on-one opportunity for Bell, who drilled it into the back of the net.
HANNAH BELL FIRST GOAL HIGHLIGHT
In the 27
th minute, Bell added her second goal of the match. She intercepted a Golden Eagle pass and sailed a kick from about 35 yards out over the ORU goalkeeper. It is the first brace in her Lion career.
HANNAH BELL SECOND GOAL HIGHLIGHT
The Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty in the 33
rd minute, but the kick bounced off the post. Montero scored in the 38
th minute off a pass from
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn), heading in a goal off a corner kick.
CAMILA MONTERO GOAL HIGHLIGHT
The first goal in the match for the Golden Eagles came in the 54
th minute as Samantha Guzman kicked in a cross pass from Zoe McCabe.
The Lions answered in the 76
th minute as a long cross pass from
Hailey Griffin (Byron Nelson) was headed in by Powell and give the Lions a 4-1 lead.
SAVANNAH POWELL GOAL HIGHLIGHT
There was a total of five yellow cards issued in the match and 22 combined fouls were called. The Lions had the 13-10 edge in shots and 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
Mitchell recorded four shots off the bench, while Bell scored on two of her three shots. In goal,
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) did not see a shot on goal in a shutout first half, while
Veronica Pacione (Birdville) recorded a save in her collegiate debut in the second half.
Along with Pacione,
Elaina Flores (McKinney – Boyd),
Ava Watts (Tulsa, Okla.), and
Alana Lawless-Felarca (Richardson) made their Lion debuts.
