Lion Soccer plays UTRGV to a scoreless tie in SLC Opener

EDINBURG – The first Southland Conference contest of the year ended in a scoreless tie for the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team at UTRGV on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Lions and the Vaqueros earn a point each in the SLC standings. A&M-Commerce is now 1-6-3 on the season, having recorded at least one point in the SLC opener in all three seasons since joining the conference. UTRGV is 4-3-2.

"Getting a point on the road is always good but I was disappointed we didn't play well enough to get the win," said coach Ashley Gordon. "I'm looking forward to getting back to training this week and prepare for this upcoming weekend."

For the Lions, Hannah Bell (Duncanville), Reneta Vargas (Coppell), Taylor Egerton (Garland – Rowlett), and Camila Montero (Langham Creek) finished with two shots each. The Lions nearly scored their first goal in the match with 12 minutes left, but it was called offsides.

In goal, Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) recorded three saves, while UTRGV's Heiddis Sigurdardottir recorded six saves.

The Lions had the 11-9 edge in shots, 6-3 in shots on goal, while UTRGV had 6 corners compared to four for A&M-Commerce.
