Northwestern State takes 3-1 win over Lion Soccer on Senior Day

COMMERCE – The Northwestern State Lady Demons outscored the East Texas A&M University soccer team in the second half to take the battle of two first-place teams via a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Lion Soccer Field.
 
Both teams came into the day being tied for first place in the Southland Conference standings. The Lady Demons now lead the SLC by a point with a conference record of 4-1-1 and are 9-3-3 overall, while the Lions fall to 5-6-4 overall and sit in a tie for third place with a record of 2-1-4. East Texas A&M has three matches left in the regular season, while Northwestern State has four.
 
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, the Lions honored their eight graduating seniors: Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), Nia Chacon (Rowlett – Sachse), Trinity Egerton (Garland – Rowlett), Payton Joost (Wylie), Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn), Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn), Nya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn), and Reneta Vargas (Coppell).
 
In the first half, both teams totaled nine shots each, with four landing on goal for both teams. The Lions had two corners compared to just one for the Lady Demons through the first 45 minutes.
 
The Lady Demons scored their first goal of the match in the 53rd minute as Paige Baumgartner scored off an assist from Dawson Marrs. The initial shot was taken by Marrs, which was saved, but Baumgartner was there to kick in the rebound.
 
In the 56th minute, Emily Sanatore added the second goal for the Lady Demons with Riley Stern receiving an assist on the goal. The third goal of the match was scored by Marrisa Henderson as NSU took a corner kick, which deflected off a Lion defender and headed in by Henderson.
 
The lone goal of the match for the Lions came in the 86th minute as Hannah Bell (Duncanville) drilled a long goal to put the Lions on the board. HANNAH BELL GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
East Texas A&M had the 17-16 edge in shots, while Northwestern State's Kennedy Rist recorded eight saves. McKenzie had seven saves for the Lions.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions play their final road match of the regular season next Sunday at Southeastern. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. in Hammond.
