CORPUS CHRISTI – Kristen Sueltz delivered an equalizing goal in the 60
th minute as the East Texas A&M University soccer team earned a 1-1 tie at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday afternoon at the Dugan Soccer Stadium.
The Lions are now of just one of two teams in the Southland Conference that is still unbeaten as they move to 1-0-4 in SLC action and 4-5-4 overall. The four ties are a program record for most in a single season.
There are now just five matches left in the regular season and the Lions are tied for third place in the standings, being just a point back of first place. The Islanders are 3-6-4 overall and 1-2-2 in SLC action. A&M-Corpus Christi is 2-0-1 against East Texas A&M in the last three regular season meetings between the two teams. The Lions won the SLC Tournament semifinal over the Islanders last season.
"I was pleased with the way we battled today. Sundays are always a challenge, and earning a point on the road is valuable. At halftime, we addressed our service on set pieces, and
Trinity Egerton's delivery on the goal was tremendous.
Kristen Sueltz's header was pure class. We'll continue to work hard this week as we prepare for SFA," said coach
Ashley Gordon.
On Sunday, the Islanders opened the scoring in the 20
th minute as MyJoi Anderson scored off an assist by Ashley Wilson. The Islanders had the 5-3 advantage in shots during the first half, as none of the Lion shots landed on goal.
In the 60
th minute, the Lions were awarded a free kick near their bench, which was taken by
Trinity Egerton (Garland – Rowlett). Sueltz (The Colony) headed in the serve from Egerton to tie the match.
Sueltz scored in both matches this past week and now has three goals in 2025, which are the most in a season for the junior midfielder. Both Sueltz and
Hannah Bell (Duncanville) led the team with three shots each.
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) recorded two saves in goal and allowed just one goal in 180 minutes this past week. Hayven Harrison also had two saves in net for the Islanders.
