Egerton scores late as Lions down SFA and move into a tie for first place

NACODOCHES – Despite being outshot 28-11 on Thursday night, the East Texas A&M University soccer team scored the lone goal to down the defending Southland Champion, Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, with a goal by Trinity Egerton in the 83rd minute at the SFA Soccer Field and move into a tie for first place.  
 
SFA outshot the Lions 10-2 in the first half and then 18-9 in the second half as East Texas A&M's first shot on goal did not come until the 76th minute.
 
In the 83rd minute, the Lions were awarded a free-kick near midfield, which was kicked by Egerton (Garland – Rowlett). The serve by Egerton went untouched in the box and ended up in the back of the net to put the Lions ahead. TRINITY EGERTON GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
The win gives the Lions a 2-0-4 record in Southland Conference play and an overall record of 5-5-4 overall, while SFA falls to 4-3-8 overall, 2-1-3 in SLC action, and has lost to East Texas A&M in the regular season for the second year in a row.
 
SFA won the SLC Tournament championship over the Lions last season and played in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Now with just four matches to play, the Lions are tied with Northwestern State atop the SLC leaderboard with 10 points each. The two teams face off in Commerce on Sunday.
 
"Winning on the road is never easy, and earning points in a challenging match is a real testament to the heart and grit of our team," said coach Ashley Gordon.
 
"I'm incredibly proud of our women for their relentless effort for 90 minutes against a quality opponent. Now, we shift our focus to Sunday, where we'll honor our seniors and continue our push for success."
 
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) recorded seven saves in goal for the Lions as she picked up her third shutout in the last four matches, having recorded 14 saves during the stretch.
 
On Thursday, Alana Lawless-Felarca (Dallas – Richardson) had team-best three shots and both Alexis Miller and Logan Heausler recorded match-high seven shots for the Lumberjacks.
