Campbell, Mullaney record double-doubles in loss to the Islanders

COMMERCE – Double-doubles from Gracie Campbell and Haley Mullaney were not enough for the East Texas A&M University volleyball team on Thursday night, falling in four sets to the A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders via set scores of 25-15, 14-25, 25-22, and 25-13, at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Lions, who fall to 9-17 overall and 7-8 in Southland action, while the Islanders are now 11-16 overall and 7-8 in SLC action. East Texas A&M, A&M-Corpus Christi, and HCU are tied for sixth place entering the final match of the regular season.

Six of the first seven points of the match went to the Islanders, but the Lions then won seven of the next eight to take an 8-7 lead. With the set tied at 10, the Islanders pulled away on a 9-2 run and closed out the set on a kill by Kaitlynn Baumann.

The Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set and increased the lead to as big as 12 in the set. Though the Islanders had 3-1 run late in the set, an attacking error gave the Lions the second set.

Both sides remained closed to start the third start until a 6-1 run by the Lions put them ahead 14-11. The Islanders flipped the script to take a 21-18 lead and despite the Lions fighting off two set points, a service error gave the third set to the Islanders.

The Islanders held a 7-2 lead to start the fourth set and pushed their advantage to as high as 12 in the set, winning the match on a Lion attacking error.

Campbell (Klein Oak) totaled 13 kills and 11 digs for her double-double and added three blocks as well, while Mullaney (Victory Christian Academy) posted 30 digs and 14 digs. Defensively, Jade Smith (Waco – Midway) added 21 digs.
