Three-pointer at the buzzer falls short against SFA

COMMERCE – A last-second go-ahead three-pointer that bounced off the rim was all that separated the East Texas A&M University men's basketball team and Stephen F. Austin on Monday night as the Lumberjacks picked up a 78-76 win at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
 
In a game with six lead changes and eight ties, SFA had a 73-66 lead with 2:13 to play. The Lions scored the next five to make it a two-point game with 1:10 to play. After a layup and a free throw, Tay Mosher (The Colony) drained a three-pointer to cut the Lumberjack lead down to 76-74 with 12 seconds left to play.
 
The Lumberjacks missed the front-end of the one-and-one on the other end, giving the Lions one last possession. East Texas A&M's three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
 
SFA has now won five in a row and has improved to 14-13 overall and 7-9 in Southland Conference play, while the Lions have lost five in a row, falling to 3-24 overall and 1-15 in SLC action with four games left in the regular season.
 
In the game, the Lumberjacks scored the first eight points of the game and had a lead as big as nine in the game, while the Lions put together a 7-0 run in the first quarter to a three-point lead in the first half.
 
Mosher shot 6 for 8 from the field for 17 points, hitting three shots from the outside, adding five rebounds, and a steal as well. TJ Thomas (Memphis, Tenn.) added 11 points, while KC Ugwuakazi (Boston, Mass.), Scooter Williams Jr. (Chattanooga, Tenn.), and Josh Taylor (Atlanta, Ga.) scored 10 points each. Thomas dished out six assists as well.
 
The Lumberjacks' Matt Hayman scored 23 points, shooting 5 for 8 from outside, while Keon Thompson scored 16 points. SFA shot 52 percent in the game, while the Lions shot 39 percent. East Texas A&M went 18 for 20 at the line, while SFA went 14 for 24.
 
In the game, the Lumberjacks committed 18 turnovers with the Lions scoring 28 points off turnovers and the Lumberjacks scored 22 off 13 Lion turnovers.
