TULSA, Okla. – The East Texas A&M University soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to Oral Roberts on Saturday night at the Case Soccer Complex.
The Lions have been shutout in back-to-back matches, falling to 1-2 on the season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-2 on the season and 2-1-1 over the Lions in the last four seasons, with both wins coming in Tulsa.
"I'm disappointed in how we played tonight. We didn't compete at the level we're capable of, and it was evident early that we were still feeling the effects of Thursday's battle against No. 22 Oklahoma," said coach
Ashley Gordon.
"Oral Roberts was clearly the better and fresher team tonight. They had the luxury of managing their players' minutes on Thursday against a NAIA opponent - something we didn't have coming off a tough game against a ranked team. That said, we have to be able to respond better than what we displayed tonight, regardless of the circumstances. We'll use this as a learning experience and get back to work."
Oral Roberts wasted no time to score its first goal of the match as Addy Johnson scored in the third minute off an assist from Brianna Castleberry. In the 33
rd minute, Marlee Fort scored an unassisted goal, while Precious Edosa tallied Oral Roberts' third goal of the night in the 84
th minute, which was assisted by Carson Arne.
The Lions were held to just five shots in the match, with
Alana Lawless-Felarca (Robinson) totaling two, while Precious had four shots to lead the Golden Eagles.
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) and
Makayla Gonzalez (South Grand Prairie) split team in goal for the Lions. McKenzie had one save, while Gonzalez recorded two as she played her first 45 minutes as a Lion.
For the Golden Eagles, Eirini Manoukaraki had a 90-minute shutout in goal and did not face a shot on goal.
