COMMERCE - The East Texas A&M University track and field teams are all set to take part in NCAA-sponsored postseason competition during the outdoor portion of the season for the first time in the Division I era on Wednesday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The NCAA West First Rounds run from Wednesday through Saturday at John McDonnell Field with the men competing on Wednesday and Friday, while the women taking the track on Thursday and Saturday. The Lions had 13 entries into the regional championships, which is fourth-most in the Southland Conference this season. The top 48 qualifiers in each event from each region make it to the First Rounds. The East First Rounds are hosted simultaneously this week in Lexington, Kentucky.
The top 12 finishers from this week's First Rounds from each region advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 10-13.
East Texas A&M has four student-athletes competing in seven events on Wednesday to begin their time in Fayetteville. Forecasts call for inclement weather in Northwest Arkansas, thus the schedule has been moved up to begin at 1 p.m.
The first Lion to compete on Wednesday is
Cheyne West (Rochester, England) in the 110 meter hurdles at 1 p.m. and competes in the 400 meter hurdles later in the afternoon. Both
Enoch Fosuhene (Accra, Ghana) and
Oguz Uyar (Cannakale, Turkey) race in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash as well. In the track events, the top 24 finishers from Wednesday's first round races will advance to Friday's quarterfinal races.
Jammel Ward (Royse City) takes part in the long jump semifinals at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday as well. The top 12 placers in each field event punch their ticket to the National Championships in Eugene.
For the Lion women,
Sandy Sakyi (Bremen, Germany) and
Amara Idinna (Viry-Châtillon, France) race in the 100 meter hurdles on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
