ABILENE – In the 11
th meeting between the two teams, the East Texas A&M University soccer team fell to the Abilene Christian Wildcats with a final score of 3-0 on Sunday at Elmer Gray Stadium, playing in Abilene for the first time since 2012.
The Lions have been winless in their last four matches and fall to 1-3-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-1-2 and they hold a slight edge in the series, leading 6-5.
"We started the match with great energy, but need to be more sophisticated in the final third," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "Set pieces were the difference in the match, and that's an area we must continue to improve. There are always lessons to take away from every match.
"We'll own the details, learn from them, and use them to get better. We will get back to work and prepare for UTSA on Thursday at home.
Allyson Reed (Cleburne) led the Lions with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Emmy Finlinson (Eagle Mountain, Utah) made four saves in her 90 minutes as goalkeeper, facing 17 shots.
Addisen Ramirez (Waxahachie) contributed with one shot on goal, while
Addison Eli (Tyler – Grace Community) added two shots in the match.
ACU took the lead when Shakira Kafero-Roberts scored at 19:46 in the first half, assisted by Gracie Kelly and Baylie Simon. Despite an early save by Finlinson, ACU's Addison Briscoe scored at 52:53, assisted by Mikayla Abrenica, pushing the home team ahead.
Later, Audrey Coppinger extended the Wildcats advantage with a goal at 62:09, again facilitated by Abrenica and Nia Leslie.
ET's attempts to respond included shots by
Ava Watts (Tulsa, Okla.) and Reed, both stopped by the Wildcats' defense.
