SAN ANTONIO – In the Southland Conference opener, the East Texas A&M University soccer team lost to UIW 2-1 on Thursday night, with the Cardinals scoring twice in the second half at the Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
The Lions recorded nine of their 12 shots in the first half and led 1-0 at halftime before the Cardinals scored twice after the break. ET has achieved at least 12 shots in two consecutive matches.
Yiselle Bernal (Dallas – Hillcrest) gave the Lions the breakthrough at 14:37, scoring from well outside the 18-yard box to put the visitors in front in the first half. It was Bernal's first goal of the season and first as a Lion.
Emmy Finlinson (Eagle Mountain, Utah) made two saves, and the Lions took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals drew even on Louise Coates' goal at 68:14, then went ahead when Tyler Coker scored from Grasyn Unruh's assist at 80:38 to take the win in the conference opener for both teams.
Allyson Reed (Cleburne) led the Lions with two shots on goal. Finlinson played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.
The Lions are 1-5-3 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Cardinals are 4-4-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. UIW has won two in a row in San Antonio over the Lions and eight of the last nine meetings between the two teams.
