TULSA, Okla. – Withstanding a late surge, the East Texas A&M University soccer team played the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
The Lions snapped a streak of three straight losses, but are now winless in their last five matches, being 1-4-2 overall, while the Golden Hurricane are 4-2-1. Tulsa and East Texas A&M played for the fourth consecutive season. The Lions are 1-2-1 in the series. Tulsa won 8-0 in Commerce last season.
The temperature at the start of Sunday's match in Tulsa was aroudn 104 degrees.
"I'm very proud of our team's performance and the effort they put in today," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "Earning points on the road is never easy, and it requires a strong mentality, discipline, and consistency throughout the match. The women demonstrated all of those qualities and stayed focused and composed for the full 90 minutes."
Allyson Reed (Cleburne) put the Lions in front at 13:23, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Golden Hurricane answered through Jordan Frederick at 42:49, sending the match to halftime tied 1-1.
The Lions kept the Golden Hurricane scoreless in the second half behind five saves from
Emmy Finlinson (Eagle Mountain, Utah). The Lions generated a late attacking stretch but could not get the match-winner through the net.
Reed put both of her shots on goal. Finlinson played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded six saves, including five in the second half. The team has achieved at least six saves in two consecutive games.
Kristen Sueltz (The Colony) added two shots, one on goal.
