A determined East Texas State eleven mixed colorful aerial fireworks with steady ground driving to turn back the heavier Trinity University Tigers 28-7 in a fighting chance for the Lone Star Conference crown.
East Texas State scored in the last three periods to annex its ninth 1947 win. East Texas opened an explosive second half when Batchelor unfurled a long pass to Wingback Bill Hawkins, who dashed 62 yards to the goal. Batchelor's 52-yard boot early in the third quarter pushed the Tigers back to their own nine. After the exchange of kicks, East Texas moved 32 yards for the third marker. James (Cargo) Batchelor plunged across from the one-foot line for the final touchdown. East Texas State gained 156 yards from passing and lost 25 yards by penalties, compared with 85 yards for Trinity.
