The Lions took a hard-fought victory over their Baptist hosts, with a second quarter uprising that saw the Lions cross the wide stripe three times with the final score being 26-14. Early in the first period Sonny Davenport tossed a pass to Tom Valdez, who took it across the goal line for the first Yellowjacket score. Charley Olson made the placement good and gave the 'Jackets a seven-point advantage. In the second quarter Eddie LaCamp took Bill Engle's pass across for the first Lion score. Then Bill Engle plunged off-tackle for 1-yard and the second Lion six pointer. Bobby "Sheepherder" Wilkinson kicked the extra point. Follow ing the East Texas kick-off, Howard Payne was forced to punt after the Lions had held them for downs. Engle passed to James "Bud" Saunders who crossed the goal for East Texas' third touchdown. Bob Nations kicked the extra point and the second period ended with the Lions leading 20-7. In the third quarter the 'Jackets managed to score again, but the Lions still led 20-14. In the last 55 seconds of play, Bob Nations came into the game, passed the ball to Joe Murphy on the 3, and the Lions' scored again to give them a 26-14 victory over Howard Payne.
