The lowly rated University of Corpus Christi Tarpons turned out to be flying fish as they routed the favored East Texas State Lions 14-7 in a non-conference fight on Lion Field. Early in the second quarter, the Tarpons started their first scoring drive from their own 31-yard line, which ended when Keith Carpenter, 219 pound fullback, crashed over for the score, and John Long booted the extra point. Mid-way in the third quarter East Texas started their 75 yard scoring drive and Bill Engle crashed over the right side of his line to score. Johnny Hicks came in and made the extra point for the Lions. In the closing minutes of play, the Tarpons moved the ball down to the Lion 16-yard line. With lightning quickness Bobby Dill, junior-college little-All-American, exploded through the right side of his line and through the Lion secondary to score standing up. Long again kicked the extra point to give the Tarpons a 14-7 victory over East Texas.
