Lions, Trinity Tigers Deadlock 0-0

The Trinity University Tigers and the East Texas State Lions fought each other on a muddy field and in a cold north wind at Lion Stadium to a 0-0 deadlock. In the first quarter it was Don Newbury, Trinity tailback, who passed and carried the ball as the Tigers drove to the Lion five yard line for their deepest penetration of the day. In the final quarter the Tigers not only had the wind to their back but also had Jack Hetherington in front of their passer most of the time. It was Hetherington, who in the final period broke through to knock Urbanowich's pass off course and enable James Boucher to intercept it on the Trinity 40. Boucher then ran back to the 25 before being forced out of bounds. The wind played havoc with Bill Engle's passing and punting. Just as the final gun sounded Sloan had completed a 7 yard pass to Engle on the Tiger's 19 yard line. The game ended in a 0-0 deadlock, with a net yardage of 177 for East Texas and 124 for Trinity. The Lions had 10 first downs compared with the Tigers' 9.
