PLAYING ITS first home game, the hard hitting East Texas Lions downed Trinity University 54 to 34. Every Lion in uniform saw action in the game. Behind the passing of Quarterback James Gray and the running of George Riley, Lloyd Corder and Marvin Brown, East Texas built up a 20-7 half-time lead and cinched the win with three third- period touchdowns. Tackles Bruno Ashley and Kenneth Potter, Guard Mannie Day and Linebacker G. A. Glenn led the Lion defensive unit, which held Trinity to only 19 yards gained rushing. Corder opened scoring for the Lions late in the first quarter by smashing over from the four. Passes from Gray to ends Tommy McCormack and Bill Self had set up the tally. Trinity struck back early in the second period when a pass penalty was called against E. T. on the 4-yard line. Quarterback Alvin Beal went over from the 6-inch line three plays later. Corder returned the Tiger kickoff to the 36. Several plays later Gray connected with Brown on a pay-off pass play covering 41 yards. Later in the same quarter Glenn recovered a Trinity fumble on the Tiger 7. Corder went over from the 1-foot line on a fourth-down plunge. The Lions were never in danger in the high-scoring second half, which saw East Texas push over five touchdowns and Trinity score four. Three of the Tiger tallies came late in the game against Lion reserves. This victory set the stage for the Lion season and proved they could score at will by pass or drive.
