COMMERCE, Texas – Breanna Harris became the ninth player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Harris finished with 21 for 1,006 so far in her career. That was not enough however as A&M-Commerce (3-14, 2-6 Lone Star Conference) could not keep Texas Woman's (9-9, 5-4 LSC) off the free throw line the entire night. The Pioneers shot 30 free throws and made 86 percent of them.
Texas Woman's shot 47 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the line en route to the 79-68 win. The Pioneer defense also force the Lions into a season high 25 turnovers and converted those into 21 points.
Harris also finished with her 34th career double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds, 12 of which were on the offensive glass.
Zenobia Winbush set a new career high with her 10 points off the Lion bench.
Devin Oliver added 11 points and five rebounds.
The Lions got on the board first after a Harris free throw but the lead was short lived as the Pioneers came right back down the floor and Toree Mason hit a three-pointer. That turned out to the only lead of change of the night as the Lions tied the score are four and six all but could never get back in front.
Texas Woman's built the lead to 15, 36-21, with 3:16 to play in the first half after a layup from Danielle Westerfield. The Lions closed then responded with a 12-4 run to close the first half to get back to within eight at the break, 40-32.
The Lions were able to get 18 offensive rebounds in the first half and held a 29-16 overall advantage on the boards in the opening 20 minutes. A&M-Commerce also held a 13-0 lead in second chance points but still found themselves in the eight point hole.
Back-to-back buckets from the Lions got them to within four at the start of the second half. But like in the first half Texas Woman's responded and put some distance between the two teams and eventually took a 51-37 lead with 15:31 to play.
A three from Winbush got the Lions to within four, 60-56, and then a jumper from
Symone Brown cut the lead in half but that was a close as the Lions would get, 60-58. Texas Woman's then converted four straight free throws and pushed the lead back to six, 66-60.
In the last five minutes the Lions were unable to get back within a possession of the Pioneers and saw Texas Woman's eventually extend their lead to 11, 79-68, after scoring nine of their last 11 points from the free throw line.
A&M-Commerce returns to the court on Saturday versus the #19 ranked TexAnns of Tarleton State. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Wisom Gym in Stephenville.
