Commerce, Texas – The Lions volleyball team prepares for a crucial final weekend of Volleyball. A&M-Commerce has two key LSC road matches on Friday, November 6 the Lions take on the Zias of Eastern New Mexico and on Saturday a match-up with West Texas A&M. The Buffalos are undefeated in conference play so far this season. These final two games are pivotal in the seeding of the LSC tournament and when all said and done we could see a four-way tie for the sixth seed.
Eastern New Mexico (12-16, 4-10 LSC) Eastern New Mexico has lost four of their last five matches including two losses to LSC foes Tarleton State and Angelo State. The Zias only win in that stretch was a 3-0 sweep of University of The Southwest. Eastern New Mexico also fell to New Mexico Highlands and Texas Permian-Basin.
The Zias defense in anchored by a pair of senior middle blockers Agartha Gibbons and Bree Anna Lucero. Gibbons is sixth in the Lone Star conference averaging 1.08 blocks per game and totaling 112 total blocks on the season. Lucero has tallied 92 total blocks this season and has averaged .88 per game. Sophomore right side Lauren Frye is the Zias biggest offensive threat racking up 308 kills and averaging 2.99 per set, which ranks sixth in the Lone Star Conference. Assisting on a majority of those kills are two senior setters Karra Day and Kennedi Catano. Catano has a team-high 557 assists an average of 5.36 per set. Day is averaging 4.85 assists per set and as contributed 500 this season.
No. 23 West Texas A&M (28-3, 14-0 LSC) The No. 23 Lady Buffalos have been on fire lately winning their last 20 matches. West Texas A&M is currently 14-0 in the Lone Star conference and ranked number five in the South Central Region. In the last five matches the Lady Buffalos have only dropped two sets and that was in a 3-2 victory at Angelo State.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Bevan has been the biggest contributor offensively for the Lady Buffs. Bevan is currently tied for fifth in the nation with 419 kills and third is the LSC in kills per game averaging 4.04. Senior setter Kameryn Hays is averaging 7.37 assists per set and has a team-high 789 this season. Defensively West Texas A&M are led by a pair of middle blockers Jessica Johnson and Cori Haley. Johnson is averaging 1.07 blocks per game and has 110 total blocks on the season. Haley has 98 total blocks and is averaging .92 per set.
A&M-Commerce looks to keep the momentum going following a huge 3-0 win over Henderson State earlier this week. The Lions also look to avenge earlier losses. A&M-Commerce lost a heart breaker the last time against Eastern New Mexico. The Zias negated a 2-0 set deficit and won the fifth game despite trailing 14-10 in the set. West Texas A&M swept the Lions in the first meeting at the Lion Field House.
Amy Davault is coming off one the most dominant 3-set performances in Lions history against Henderson State where she racked up 25 kills and 14 digs. Davault currently ranks 12th in the nation in total kills with 420 and is averaging 4.20 per set to lead the Lone Star Conference.
Courtney Tate is averaging 9.79 assists per game, which is third in the LSC and has racked up 979 assists.
Ashley Mireles has a team-high 483 digs and
Delanee Clark has racked up 60 blocks to lead the Lions defensively.
First serve against Eastern New Mexico is 8 p.m. central time and 7 p.m. Mountain time. The match against West Texas A&M on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. These last two matches have major LSC conference implications.
